A study in Spain found that drinking alcohol daily, in moderately or excessively causes a reduction in the risk of cardiovascular disease in men.
This controversial study was done in several health centers in Spain and gotten down to analyze the drinking habits of more than 15,500 men and 26,000 women between 29 and 69 years.
Results were recorded over 10 years and concluded that both moderate and high consumption of alcohol reduces up to 50% rates of heart disease in men.
In women not detected the same benefit and is thought to be because they do not process alcohol the same way as men.
However, it has been able to establish what are the mechanisms that generate such protection, so experts warn that caution should be treated with these findings because the study did not take into account the effect caused by alcohol in other organs.
“Heavy drinking raises blood pressure, which in turn can cause a stroke. It also increases the risk of certain cancers, and may cause damage to the brain, pancreas and liver, “the BBC said Ellen Mason, an expert from the British Heart Foundation.
“And one of the limitations of this study is that not show if alcohol consumption among participants had an impact on other diseases, or whether they died of diseases unrelated to heart.”
To all this the British Heart Foundation recommends that men drink no more than two glasses of wine or two bottles of 500 ml. light beer a day and that women limit their consumption to a regular glass of wine or bottle of light beer per day.
