Acupuncture – effective in relieving menstrual cramps

According to research, based on an analysis of 27 studies that included three thousand women, the age-old technique is effective because it acts by stimulating production of endorphins and serotonin in the central nervous system.
The endorphins, compounds produced by the body results in a feeling of wellbeing, while serotonin is a neurotransmitter in the brain.
Compared with drug therapy or traditional medicine, acupuncture was associated with a significant reduction in pain, wrote the authors, specialists in the Eastern Hospital of Kyung Hee University (South Korea).
Menstrual cramps are the most common problems affecting women and characterized by their sharp, dull or intense in abdomen: colic that appears a few days before menstruation and may last for two or three days.
