Obesity and Depression

obesity and depressionObesity and depression often the major research indicates a clear relationship between the two disorders: depression may promote the development or the rise in obesity, which in turn can lead to depression or worse. This gives us one more reason to fight obesity or overweight and also a possible tool to attack them.

A review of studies conducted by researchers in the Netherlands has found a very strong and in both directions between obesity and depression. Its findings, based on analysis of 15 previous research by other scientists, have been published in the Archives of General Psychiatry.

The researchers say in that publication that overweight people have a 55% increased risk of developing depression and, meanwhile, who suffers from depression has a 58% greater chance of becoming obese. And this, both men and women. It is seen that the relationship is very strong. Furthermore, since the association between depression and obesity was greater than between depression and overweight, it appears that the number of kilos of more increases the strength of that relationship.

The review of studies, however, can not clarify the reasons for this link, and so the researchers call for more research on the subject. However, venture various scenarios: depression could lead to overweight through neuroendocrine alterations by antidepressant use or carry less healthy lifestyles.

Moreover, the inverse relationship could be due to obesity and its associated processes (inflammation and insulin resistance, mainly) produce depressive effects. Nor discarded psychological, as the pressure of the models of beauty which in turn, produce undesirable results, such as feeling rejected or lack of self esteem.

Even without knowing the reasons for this close relationship, namely that there puts important tools in our hands. First, to detect mutual risk situations, in order to prevention: a depressed person is more likely to fall into the overweight, and vice versa. But also in the case of a patient suffering from both disorders, should be known that the passing of one of them shall, probably, overcoming the other.

On the other hand, if we extend the relationship between both conditions also mild cases, as seems logical, we find a reason to fight kilos left over us: if we take them off, in addition to being healthier, may be a little happier.
