The Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC) has developed a biotechnological process to produce a natural molecule, the fagomina, which delays hunger. Marketing could begin later this year.
It is known that certain types of carbohydrates (refined sugars, integral cereals, potatoes, pasta …) are not recommended for those with weight problems. The reason is that very quickly metabolized by the body, thus producing a sharp rise in blood glucose. But, shortly afterwards, causing a sharp decrease of glucose, which wakes up hungry again and need to eat more.
The fagomina, a substance in buckwheat seed, has the ability to delay the absorption of glucose, so as not to produce the said bill, nor the sharp decrease hunger that wakes us early. Therefore, its addition to the foods mentioned in the previous paragraph (very consumed by another party), would make, in fact, less fattening. What is the problem? That its extraction in large quantities is costly and difficult.
And here comes the contribution of the CSIC, with the participation of the Institute of Advanced Chemistry of Catalonia, Josep LluĂs Torres explains, researcher at the CSIC, have managed to develop and patent a biotechnological process to produce large quantities fagomina. This will, in the near future, this molecule to incorporate new foods that could serve to facilitate weight control in people who eat normally.
The charge of bringing the product to the consumer is a company associated with the CSIC, Biolange, and start with the competitive and promising U.S. market later this year. Hopefully, if all goes well, later extending its marketing to the world.
