The Low-Calorie Diet Is Not Temporary
A new study confirms and gives reasons for what many already felt: standard low-calorie diets (those that are followed during a certain time) will not work. They found that in response to the diet, the body releases cortisol, which causes stress and abdominal fat, which would justify to recover the previous weight. Changes in diet and physical activity should be forever.
Research conducted at the University of California (USA), whose results were published in “Psychosomatic Medicine”, done on the effects of traditional diets (temporarily subjected to caloric restriction, usually strict.) has reached some interesting conclusions.
121 female volunteers divided into four groups, which assigned different dietary strategies for three weeks: the first component must account for and register the calories they ate, with a maximum of 1,200 per day, the second had to count the calories they ate , without being subject to a maximum, the third had a maximum of 1,200 calories a day, but not the obligation to account for anything and the room did not have to count anything or subjected to any restriction.
Before and after the test was measured cortisol levels of participants. Cortisol is a hormone that is associated with increased fat in the abdominal region. The researchers found that the hormone was increased in participants who underwent caloric restriction. And they think that this would be one of the reasons that people are undergoing serious difficulties diet to lose weight and / or maintaining achieved. So they conclude that the diet is not a good option for permanent weight loss.
As the increase of cortisol, as well as increased abdominal fat leads to an increased level of stress, is that people who undergo a diet are exposed to twice the risk of cardiovascular problems, which is another reason to flee of temporary diets.
With reference to control calories, women who did suffered a further increase in cortisol. Thus, one can conclude that the patient undergoes a traditional diet with a strict control of a limited amount of calories, could be affected negatively on psychological well-being: to suffer stress, feeling of hunger and deprivation … And that, in turn, makes it harder still to maintain the diet over time.
This study is not just a new episode in the current tendency to reject the diets for the benefit of permanent changes in food and customs. That is, change forever the way of life. To the extent that many experts recommend, so strict, no diet ever.
