Soft drinks with fructose and fat caloric intakeAccording to research by Spanish scientists, soft drinks sweetened with fructose, common in our diet, have a greater effect on obesity that due to the calories they contain. Excessive intake of fructose can cause a metabolic disorder with leptin resistance included, which represents a notable tendency to gain weight.

Sugars can occur in two varieties: monosaccharides (such as fructose or glucose), which are basic units of sugar, or disaccharides, such as white sugar, which is the union of two monosaccharides. Although they have the same amount of calories metabolized by the body differently.

Fructose is fruit sugar, and had always been considered a good sweetener because, unlike glucose and other carbohydrates, insulin does not increase.

But now it has been shown that fructose, consumed in large quantities, produces certain imbalances of dire consequences when it comes to maintaining or achieving a healthy weight. Raise the level of triglycerides in the blood and impairs the body’s energy balance, hindering the absorption of calories. The result is a marked tendency to be overweight or obese.

The research, conducted by scientists at the Center for Biomedical Research in Red-Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn) has been led by Dr. Philip F. Casanueva and coordinated by Dr. Miguel Ángel Martínez Olmos. Others were based on previous research published in “Hepatology”, “AJP-Heart and Circulatory”, “Physiology” and “Hypertension.”

The researchers concluded that fructose, especially if ingested in liquid form (found mainly in soft drinks) and abundantly and continuously, making the body develop resistance to leptin, a hormone that is very important to regulate body energy balance and the level of blood lipids, as already mentioned.

What practical lessons can be drawn from this research? The first is that the mechanisms that lead to overweight are not as simple as a mere addition or subtraction of calories. Certain foods or behaviors involving alterations in the body with significant consequences that go far beyond its contribution or caloric expenditure. And this is one of them, especially for children and adolescents, whose consumption of soft drinks is sometimes exaggerated.

Although research is still being discussed preclinical should change the habit of consuming soft drinks at all hours, sometimes without fully realizing that what we are doing. Many people consume quantities of soft drinks a day close to two liters which, according to those researchers, is equivalent to the intake of fructose in 20 liters of natural fruit juice.
